Introduction
This work emerged when DGR cut down a picture he was working on, one of his many attempts at rendering Mrs. Morris as Proserpine. See the group of paintings and drawings relating to that subject.
Iconographic
Mrs. Morris holds a bunch of snowdrops, and in her hair are yellow primroses. These are spring flowers and suggest that the picture represents Proserpine before she was carried off to Hades.
