Introduction
This is the copy of the proofs that were given “To Harry Ward Esq. with friendly regards. D.G. Rossetti. Xmas /61”, as DGR's signed insciption to Ward shows. The inscription is made on the revise proof of the title page that is included with the principal set of proofs.
Besides the main corpus of proof pages for this book, a set of uncut and unbound proof pages are laid inside the box. They include an inscribed half-title and the new un-illustrated title page with Smith, Elder & Co. imprint; cancellans for leaves E6, F2 and H4; and a reissue of the last gathering GG (p. 449-464) which includes index, with printer's imprint moved from p. 451 to 464.
