DGR's drawing was executed for the woodcut illustration made by the Dalziel brothers for William Allingham's poem
“The
Maids of Elfin-mere”, which was published in June 1855 in his volume of verse
The Music Master,
A Love Story, and Two Series of Day and Night Songs
.
DGR was extremely unhappy with the woodcut when he first saw it, and
was never completely satisfied; but after initially refusing to
see his drawing appear in its woodcut version, he eventually relented
and the work was published.
Dalziel's woodcut is a much more severe work than DGR's
drawing. Nevertheless, it is an excellent work in its own right.
