Introduction
This is one of the two pictures that DGR made for Ruskin in 1855 to illustrate the Purgatorio (see commentary for Dante's Vision of Rachel and Leah ). The present location of the finished watercolour is not known.
Literary
The picture illustrates Dante, Purgatorio, Canto XXVIII. 37ff.—Dante's encounter with Mathida gathering flowers in the Earthly Paradise on the shores of Lethe.
