Introduction
Murray Marks (1840-1918) was an art dealer and collector who had particularly close relations with DGR and Whistler. He was prominent in the London literary and artistic scene of the time and helped both artists build their porcelain and pottery collections.
Production History
Though dated 1868, this may be the drawing DGR refers to in his letter to Marks of 15 August 1869 (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 69. 124 ). But see as well the second portrait of Mrs. Marks in red chalk, also dated 1868.
