In the the 17 May 1851 issue of The Spectator, WMR reviewed the current exhibition at the Royal Academy. As with his reviews of the previous year in The Critic, however, he let his brother write some of the specific reviews—in this case, the highly equivocal notice of Paul Falconer Poole's The Goths in Italy. Poole (1807 - 1879) was a genre painter given to literary and historical subjects.
