Introduction
This is the second state of the First Trial Book; Lewis calls it Proof state 7 (see The Trial Book Fallacy ). It incorporates some alterations made in the first state, of which Ashley 1393 is a near perfect copy. This is the copy that DGR sent to Alicia Losh with his letter of 8 October 1869 (Fredeman, Correspondence, 69.176). Another copy of this second state of the trial book is the Fitzwilliam copy.
Textual History: Revision
Only one correction appears in this copy (on page 85). For some reason the bottom two-thirds of the leaf carrying pages 49-50 has been cut away.
Printing History
This second state of the First Trial Book must have been produced between 3 - 7 October 1869. The first state would have been printed off shortly before 3 October.
