Swinburne co-authored these “Notes” with WMR,
who did “Part I” of the two-part essay on
the exhibition. Swinburne's part is notable for its concluding seven
pages (45-51), where he discusses the paintings of his friend DGR, and
in particular the works Sibylla Palmifera,
Lady Lilith, and
Venus Verticordia. The essay is the first
appearance in print of the sonnets for these pictures.
