Sharp wrote this sonnet as a general homage to DGR, but with particular reference to the sonnet group DGR titled “Five English Poets” (and published in his
Ballads and Sonnets
volume).
This was the second time Sharp wrote a poetical encomium to DGR. The first was sent as a Christmas gift in 1879, a few months after he had become acquainted with DGR (see DGR's letters to Watts of 24 September and 25 December 1879,
