This jewelry design is one of DGR's most striking. The finished piece was used effectively in several of his
best paintings, perhaps most memorably in
Monna Vanna. This, the earliest known sketch, was found in a
group of
disbound notebook pages comprising (for the most part) the remains of an integral notebook that DGR
used between 1863-1869 for various kinds of memoranda. On the page are three preliminary designs for the brooch.
