This set of six small drawings is made in a copy of DGR's
The
Early Italian Poets (1861). The date of their execution is uncertain but the style is
early and it is likely DGR made them shortly after the book appeared in print. He wanted to
issue his book of translations with a set of illustrations as well as an illuminated title page. The
publisher refused on grounds of expense. These drawings probably represent a selection of a much
larger set he had planned for his book. They appear on pages
12, 15,
18, 21,
26, and 29
and they illustrate
either the poem ending on the page with the drawing, or the poem beginning on the facing page.
