Of other studies or replicas there remain to be

mentioned a pen-and-ink drawing about 1879, formerly

in the possession of Mr. Valpy, and at least one unfinished

oil painting, sold at Rossetti's sale in 1883, and now in

the Corporation Art Gallery at Birmingha. This—a

head and hands merely, with none of the background or drap-

ery filled in -is popularly known as The Lady of Pity , and

has been misleadingly described as different from the pic-

ture. Comarison of the two shows that it would have been identical, and that it is in fact simply an unfinshed repli-

ca, though a fine one so far as it goes.”
