Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is one of three prints made from a single negative. Mrs. Morris is reclining on a plush loveseat facing right with her head resting on a black pillow and turned slightly away from the viewer. Her hands are in her lap and the pose is set against a black backdrop. This print is a modern work made from the original 1865 negative. The other two extant prints were made in 1865 and were both cropped down: the print in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the other copy in the V & A. The larger modern print is darker and shows more background area, including part of a canopy and some of its upholding poles.

Production History

Printed around 1930.
