Although Surtees titles the sketch “Drapery study,” she comes closer
to the truth when she describes the object as a “Dantesque
cloak.” In fact, the sketch is undoubtedly a study for Virgil in DGR's
first watercolor replica of
Paolo and Francesca da Rimini.
