The picture was executed in late June 1853 when DGR was staying at Newcastle with William Bell Scott (see DGR's letter to WMR of 1 July 1853, Fredeman, Correspondence, 53. 41.). It was bought by Ruskin, who called it the “golden girl with black guitar” when he had it framed in 1865 (see Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné vol. 1, 23.).
