Introduction
DGR stayed at Kelmscott from 12 July to 8 October 1871 with Mrs. Morris and her two daughters, Jennie and May, and this portrait was almost certainly made at that time, as well as another coloured chalk drawing that DGR did of May Morris. DGR's fondness for the girls is apparent from his 1869 gift to them of “Verses Sent with a Copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland”.
