Note: According to Surtees, Herbert was the “[d]aughter of a West
Country brass-founder, she married Edward Crabb in 1855 (she assumed the
final E at a later date); her stage name, Miss Herbert, by which she was
more generally known, has been retained throughout. Her Christian names were
divided between the stage and the artist's studio; in the playbills of the
period she invariably appears as Louisa Herbert, while Ruth was the name
