Introduction
DGR met the poet Thomas Gordon Hake (1809-1895) in October 1869 and they became close friends. However, DGR had admired Hake's writing from the early 1850s when he came across Hake's prose epic Vales (1839) under its reprinted title Valderno (see DGR's letter to Hake of 8 October 1869, Fredeman, Correspondence, 69. 175 ). DGR reviewed two of Hake's books of poetry, Madeline with Other Poems and Parables and Parables and Tales
