Introduction
According to Surtees, “The head with beard, drawn twice in profile to left on a sheet of writing paper belonging to Murray Marks, who was present when the drawing was made with the aid of a ‘camera lucida’. On the reverse, sketch of another head (pen and ink)” (Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné , vol. 1, 165 (no. 317)).
