Introduction
The drawing is one of the series that DGR made in 1846-1847 to illustrate Poe's verse. The drawing style is an effort to imitate the technique of fifteenth-century German engraving work. (For further commentary see the discussion of The Raven. Angel Footfalls).

The drawing illustrates Poe's poem of the same name (see in particular lines 41-43).
