Introduction
Born Georgiana Macdonald (1840-1920) of a respectable religious family, she met Edward Jones through their mutual interest in art. He proposed to her in 1856 but his financial circumstances delayed their marriage until 1860. It is clear that she and William Morris fell in love, which complicated the domestic lives of both couples considerably—a situation complicated further when the intimacy of DGR and Mrs. Morris began in the mid-1860s.
Surtees notes that this drawing may have been intended as a wedding present to the sitter in June of 1860. The drawing never left Rossetti's possession, however, and was included in his posthumous sale (A Catalogue Raisonné, 159).
