Introduction
Rossetti met Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) soon after writing a letter in admiration of the older artist's work in March 1848 (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 48. 3 ). At the time of this sketch, Brown was at work on his well-known painting, The Last of England.
