Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

Surtees says that the drawing is fragmented with “both heads torn off the paper.” It depicts “two women. . .seated one behind the other. . .the far one only lightly sketched” (Vol. 1, 5).

Literary

As the imbedded text indicates, the drawing illustrates the seventh stanza of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's “The Romaunt of Margret.”

Included Text

  • Look in its face, Ladye,
  • And keep thee from thy swound
  • With a spirit bold they pulses hold,
  • And hear its voices sound!
  • For so will sound thy voice
  • When thy face is to the wall;
  • And such will be thy face, Ladye,
  • When the maidens work thy pall.
