Introduction

“The subject is taken from Virgil's descriptions of Orpheus leading Eurydice out of Hades, over the Styx, and giving the forbidden backward glance. Enthroned behind them are Proserpine, a shouded lamenting figure, and Pluto, who draws aside a curtain revealing a stairway leading up to earth” (see Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. 1, 141).
