Production History

Surtees notes similarities between this painting and The Beloved (c. 1866):“ the action of the head and the facial type so closely resemble that of the left-hand bridesmaid in The Beloved that it is probable that Rossetti is here using a study made from the earlier painting” ( A Catalogue Raisonné , 113).
