Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

Little is known about this unfinished portrait of Annie Miller. DGR's correspondence with Ellen Heaton, who owned the picture, does not allude to it. The picture seems to be part of DGR's early 1860s program to investigate colour as a compositional resource. Marillier rightly observes that it is “very effective as a study in one colour, the background, the hair, and the lady's dress being all in subtly varied tones of yellow” ( Marillier, DGR: An Illustrated Memorial, 131 ).
