Scholarly Commentary
Introduction
Design in ink for a sofa framed by poles of alternating dark and light
bands, and cushions lashed to them. Fan-like ornaments are mounted on the
back and arms. A second, less finished drawing of a sofa is underneath.
Notes and numbers in pencil are also on the sheet of paper, most in the hand of William Morris.
DGR made
another sofa design around the same
time, perhaps for
the sofa he designed for
himself around 1863.
Production History
A design for a sofa made for Ford Madox Brown by the William Morris Firm. It
was exhibited at the International Exposition of 1862. It also appears in
the background of the
Potiphar drawing.
