Production History
The watercolour is dated 1859, which is also the date it was bought by Thomas Plint. If DGR refers to this picture in his letter to Madox Brown of 15 February 1859, as Fredeman suggests, then it would be a reconstruction that DGR made from “a head and a landscape” (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 59. 7 ). The picture is notably dead both in coloring and composition and as such may reflect a perfunctory and purely monetary interest on DGR's part.
