Introduction
Of the two volumes of this work, this is the one with the most extensive annotations and marginalia. DGR's notations and additions are especially interesting in the section of the book dealing with Cavalcanti. On page 321, for example, DGR annotates a six-line passage as a “Motto for P.R.B.”, and on a blank page at the end of the volume (page 549) he has written his translation of a passage from Dante's Purgatorio (IX. 94-99) that is a grounding text for nearly every aspect of his work, both pictorial and poetic.
