Introduction
Like its
companion sketch, this was made for the background
of
Water Willow. In a
letter to his uncle Henry Francis Polydore in August of 1871, DGR described his fondness for the
country surrounding Kelmscott, which provided the backdrop for the picture (Fredeman,
Correspondence, 71.130).
Fredeman uses this set of pencil sketches as the fly-title
for the his Rossetti Cabinet plates (see Fredeman,
A Rossetti Cabinet page 19 for the fly-title and
page 1 for a description of the sketches.
