Note: On the reverse of this sheet is a drawing of a fifteenth or sixteenth-century lamp, complete with a description by DGR. There is also a note by WMR, which identifies the writing and the date of the image: “Gabriel's handwriting c/48.”

Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This work may be a preliminary study for The Salutation of Beatrice, painted in 1859. The composition most closely resembles the left-hand compartment of the finished pen and ink drawing, dated earlier in the decade.
