Introduction
This letter contains one of the three manuscript copies of the sonnet “A Dark Day” that DGR sent to friends about the time he wrote the sonnet in January 1855. This copy went to William Bell Scott, along with the epigram—probably DGR's— “Priapus Higg Loquitur”, in his letter of 13 February 1855. As eventually published by DGR, the sonnet is very different from this early manuscript text.
