These lines were written by Sir William Allan (1837-1903), the Scots radical politician and engineer perhaps most
celebrated for his
Theory of Arches
1875
. He
turned his hand to poetry in his later years, publishing a number of volumes beginning in 1890.
He didn't publish this "Nocturne", however, but apparently sent the manuscript to WMR after
DGR's death.
