In the the 31 May 1851 issue of The Spectator, WMR reviewed the current exhibition at the Royal Academy. As with his reviews of the previous year in The Critic, however, he let his brother write some of the specific reviews—in this case, the notice of Holman Hunt's important painting Valentine Rescuing Sylvia from Proteus. Earlier in the month he had reviewed Brown's Geoffrey Chaucer Reading the Legend of Custance to Edward III.
