The Early Italian Poets Text
Scholarly Commentary
Introduction
This is Part 14 of the “Sotto Docilità” section of the Documenti d'Amore of Francesco da Barberino (1264-1348). The translation is fairly free and the source text—Ubaldini's edition of 1614—is difficult. For further commentary see DGR's note in The Early Italian Poets and the editorial commentary for DGR's translation of an excerpt from Del reggimento e de'costumi delle donne, also by Francesco. DGR translated four short portions of this long work.
Textual History: Composition
Probably late 1840s.
Printing History
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
