Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

DGR assigns this poem to Ruggieri di Amici, a minor Sicilian poet who was put to death by the order of Frederick II in 1246; but the canzonetta is in fact the work of Jacopo da Lentino. DGR's source text would seem to have been Poeti del Primo Secolo (I. 285-286), but the poem is there firmly assigned to Jacopo da Lentino. This kind of anomaly occurs in the case of a handful of DGR's translations and suggests that he did not give a complete listing of his sources in The Early Italian Poets (page xii).

Textual History: Composition

Probably an early translation, in the mid- to late 1840s.

Printing History

The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
