Introduction
Thi is DGR's working draft copy of the poem, with prefatory notes by Charles Fairfax Murray and WMR. The manuscript includes much material that never found its way into the final version of the ballad, as well as some prose notes and a numerated prose sketch (both imbedded in the compositional draft) of the historical events that DGR outlined for poetic treatment. As with nearly all of his longer works, DGR composed the ballad on the rectos of a notebook, leaving the facing verso blank for additions, notes, and revisions.
