Introduction
The sonnet is closely associated with the events in Section XXIII of the Vita Nuova, and in particular with the canzone translated by DGR as “A very pitiful lady, very young”. The translation is close to the original in all respects.
The source text for DGR's translation was Fraticelli's Opere Minori di Dante Alighieri (I. 144).

Probably an early translation, late 1840s.
Printing History
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
