Mérimée worked into chapter 12 of his short novel Colomba (1840).

Memoir (page 125). In a letter to WMR (23 January 1845) DGR praises Mérimée's story and remarks on its “Corsican ballads, exactly in the style of the old English poets; one of which pleased me so much that I took the trouble of translating it” (see Fredeman, Correspondence I. 39).
