According to WMR's note on this text, these are prose notes for several pictures DGR was planning, or had already executed, on this central Arthurian theme. He also dates the text to 1858. But neither of these observations are certain. The notebook in which WMR found the text is, by his own admission there, one that DGR was using in 1871, and we can tell from its contents that he was using it again quite late, around 1880. On the other hand, the notebook also has material that seems earlier still, like (perhaps) this text. But we cannot be sure. Neither can we be certain that these notes were not for some ballad or prose tale that DGR may have been contemplating.
