This is a commentary drawn out of the 1 July 1850 issue of The Critic, WMR's review of the Royal Academy's current exhibition. DGR wrote this notice of a picture by the lanscape artist Charles West Cope (1811-1890) principally to contrast it (unfavorably) with the oil painting by Ford Madox Brown, Lear and Cordelia (1849-1854), of which Brown made three versions.
DGR did not know Cope personally.
