Introduction
This work comprises a kind of “double text”, of which there are several examples in DGR's corpus. They are analogous to DGR's “double works”, except that in this case the components are two texts (in different languages) rather than a text and a picture. They also have affinities with “triple works” like Proserpine in that the latter carry a double textual element.
This particular work has close affinities with the double work Mnemosyne.
The work is clearly a reprise on the famous initial comment Francesca makes to Dante when he addresses her in Inferno Canto V (see DGR's translation).
Textual History: Composition
The date of composition, 1880, is given on WMR's authority, but is substantiated by the appearance of the texts in notebook pages that date from 1880.
Printing History
First published by WMR in 1911.
