Scholarly Commentary
Introduction
This is the earliest extant copy of the sonnet. The cancelled title suggests that it might have been written earlier than 1869, which is the date traditionally assigned to the work. WMR once speculated that the sonnet was written in 1860 (see WMR, DGR as Designer and Writer 293).
