Introduction

Though a good epigrammatist, DGR did not distinguish himself with this early piece, hitherto unpublished. The only text of the work is a fair copy manuscript written at the end of the fair copy of his elegy on Algernon Stanhope. Known as “the Napoleon of Peace”, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) came to the throne at the revolution of 1830. As with Marx and many others, DGR's contempt for the king was considerable.
