Scholarly Commentary
Introduction
This holograph fair copy, the earliest of the extant manuscripts, differs in significant ways from the later versions revised by DGR. It is oddly paginated in another hand, with the page numbered “2” carrying the last two stanzas of DGR's juvenile poem on Napoleon, “The End of It”. The two pages are torn from a notebook where their sequence would have been (using the handwritten numeration on the manuscript) 2, 1, 3, 4.
