Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is a fragmentary set of pages for the Second Trial Book. Collating these pages with the other fragmentary set in the Princeton/Troxell Collection shows that DGR must have kept at least two sets of proofs to work on. These proofs carry revisions that were made after the revisions made in the other fragmentary set in the Princeton/Troxell Collection.

With the exception of a few pages in each instance, both fragmentary sets of pages were printed in the same type setting—i.e., some time in early November 1869. In the case of this set of pages, duplicates of pages 193-194 and 197-198 are included. The leaves with pages 1-2 and 203-204 are from the second state of the early printing. This document does not include the front matter.
